Hyalgan
Hyalgan was designed specifically for use in treatment osteoarthrosis knee pain in patients who have not responded to nonpharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics. It is a derivative of hyaluronic acid, and it works by increasing the effectiveness of the fluid in the knee joint, acting as a shock absorber and lubricant.
It is not suitable for patients that have a skin infection or disease around the injection site area, or a known reaction to hyaluronate preparations.
Additionally, caution must be exercised when dealing with a patient that is allergic to egg products, avian proteins, and feathers. Hyalgan’s effectiveness and safety have not been tested in regards to children, or women that are pregnant or breastfeeding. So, these patients should not receive this treatment until further studies have been established.
For inflammatory arthritis patients, there have been reports of a brief increase in inflammation in the knee that was injected with Hyalgan. When there are current signs of inflammation, the product should not be injected. Patients may experience passing pain, and swelling, of the joint that was injected.
Side effects may include pain around the injection site, headache, bruising, rashes, itching, joint pain and swelling, and gastrointestinal complaints. However, the adverse effects did not increase in severity or frequency over the course of the treatment cycle. Additional side effects may include stiffness, bruising, warmth or pain around the injection area, aches, muscle and joint pain. More severe side effects may include: severe allergic reactions, such as itching, rash, tightness in the chest, rash, tightness in the chest, swelling of the tongue, mouth, lips, or face; persistent or severe headaches; dizziness, persistent, painful, or severe pain around the injected joint. If any of these side effects present themselves the patient should seek immediate medical attention.
The patient should report any allergies to medicines, substances, foods, bird products, whether they are planning to become pregnant or already pregnant or breast feeding. Additionally, they should provide the medications (prescriptions & non-prescription, including herbal or dietary supplements) that they are taking. Some medications interact with Hyalgan, particularly quaternary ammonium salts.

Someone should be present to drive the patient home from the hospital, clinic, or doctor’s office after they have had the treatment. If the inflammation that occurs post treatment worsens or continues they should seek medical treatment.
Following treatment, patients should avoid weight bearing activity, and strenuous activity for at least 48 hours after treatment. You should advise the patient on when they can resume normal activities again, including exercise and sports.
